Dong Won Kang climbed up on a plastic folding chair Sunday morning to point to a spot on the wall where he says a stray bullet entered his sushi restaurant, two doors down from where Ottawa police say a man fired several shots inside a pizza shop.
The incident happened just before 8:30 Saturday night inside the Milano Pizzeria at Hunt Club Road and Bank Street.
No one was hurt in the shooting and police say a man — described by witnesses as wearing a dark coloured hooded sweatshirt, black pants and shoes, sunglasses and a bandana covering his face — fled on foot.
Shots were fired inside the Milano Pizzeria at Hunt Club Road and Bank Street, Saturday night. June 9, 2018.
“We were very surprised,” said Kang’s wife, Seong Hee Park, who was inside Delivery Sushi at the time with two other employees and several customers.
As Ottawa police and at least one police dog descended on the plaza and cordoned off the area with yellow tape, she called Kang, who was out on a delivery, to let him know not to be worried when he returned to such commotion.
The couple has owned their restaurant for 10 years and said this is the first time something like this has happened.
A pair of Milano employees approached Sunday morning were tight-lipped about the incident, which one described as “very confusing.”
Inside the small shop, which has a counter on one side and a row of bar stools along the opposite wall, it appeared a ceramic tile had been hit.
Staff at nearby restaurants said there was a heavy police presence afterward, but no one reported having witnessed anything.
Just after 11 a.m. Sunday, several Ottawa police officers wearing bulletproof vests scoured the area.
A command post had been set up in an adjacent parking lot, which was cordoned off with yellow tape.
As of Saturday night, no arrests had been made. When asked for an update on Sunday, all east division investigators, who are heading up the case, would say is that the investigation was continuing.
