Ottawa police are warning the public not to leave valuables in their cars after “a rash of theft from vehicles” this year.

According to police, there have been around 1,600 thefts from vehicles reported since the start of the year — an average of more than 10 every day. Half of those, police said, took place downtown.

“Thieves are literally going door to door looking for an unlocked vehicle, and once they gain entry, they go through the entire car, including the trunk,” said Const. Stephanie Lemieux in a press release on Wednesday.

The best way to prevent theft, said police, is to make sure there’s nothing worth stealing in your car. “It isn’t enough to hide items in the console or under the car seats because the thieves are just that thorough,” said Lemieux.

Police also recommend putting an “all valuables removed” sign in the windshield of your car. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a brightly-coloured sign that declares the absence of anything worth stealing inside.

They are also encouraging residents to report to police even if nothing is stolen. “Even if your car is broken into and nothing is taken, it still needs to be reported to police,” said Const. Dawn Neilly.
