A Kingston police officer riding a motorcycle suffered a minor knee injury after being hit by a pickup truck that was driven through a red light Tuesday morning.

Const. Pete Lafontaine was riding his Kingston police motorcycle north on Division Street at about 10:30 a.m. when he went through a green light at Elliott Avenue. As he did he saw an eastbound truck on Elliott Avenue travel through a red light at about 50 km/h, police said in a news release.

The officer was able to slow down but hit the rear, passenger-side bumper of the truck as it passed in front of him. A car travelling in the lane next to the officer was also forced to brake to avoid a collision. The officer kept the bike upright and as a result he only suffered the minor injury. The motorcycle sustained minimal front-end damage.

The driver of the truck, a 56-year-old local man whose identity was not released, stopped immediately and was both cooperative and apologetic, police said.

He was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to stop at a red light.
