Quebec’s police watchdog has released the identity of a man killed June 21 when he was struck by a car while fleeing Gatineau police on foot.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said coroners identified the man as Zachary Fairbairn, 28, of Ottawa.

The agency said no further information would be released.

Preliminary investigation shows police were called to the Casino du Lac-Leamy at about 1:20 a.m. June 21 after receiving reports that a man was allegedly attempting to break icars in the casino lot.

An officer arriving at the scene spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description and got out of his cruiser to try to intercept the suspect.

The suspect fled, ran into traffic and was struck by a vehicle on Montclair Boulevard.

The suspect died in hospital at about 4:30 a.m.

The BEI asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them through the website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca

Similar to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, Quebec’s BEI is responsible for investigating all cases in which a person dies or is seriously injured during a police intervention or while detained by police.
