Hydro-Québec will adjust dam controls to temporarily lower water levels Wednesday to aid the search for a 20-year-old Petawawa man who failed to return to shore after a swim in the Ottawa River five days ago, according to provincial police.
A Canadian Forces helicopter, emergency response team and members of the military will pitch in to help the OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit, the OPP said in a release.
Upper Ottawa Valley OPP officers were first dispatched to a set of rapids at Grants Settlement Road in Whitewater Region Township at about 8:30 p.m. June 22.
The man was swimming with another man from Petawawa when both were swept away by the current. Only one managed to make his way back to shore. He summoned help when you could find his friend.
Police, Whitewater and Garrison Petawawa firefighters and Renfrew County paramedics all launched a search with the help of local whitewater rafting experts as helicopters with infrared technology looked for the man from the air.
OPP divers joined the search Saturday which has continued every day since.
Police have not identified the swimmers.
