The Sûreté du Québec say they are looking for the driver of a jet ski that fled the scene after hitting an Ottawa woman on the Gatineau river, about 25 kilometres south of Maniwaki.
The woman, a 26-year-old woman from the Ottawa area, was taken to an Ottawa hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said they were not sure which hospital in Ottawa she was taken to.
The police say that she was floating on a large party raft on the river near l’Île Patry, with six other people, when they were struck by a jet ski. Police said that they are not sure what led to the watercraft hitting the woman, but think that the driver may have been doing “maneuvers” designed to “make waves.”
None of the other six people on the raft were injured, police say.
After hitting the woman, the driver of the jet ski fled the scene. Police pointed out that the law is no different than if it were on the road — meaning that the driver, if caught, could face hit and run charges.
“It’s considered, right now, a hit and run,” said a Quebec police spokesperson.
Police say that they have a fairly good description of the jet ski and its driver. “For now, we do have a good description of the vehicle right now,” said a Quebec police spokesperson.
They are not currently releasing any further details about the driver of the jet ski. “We’re going to wait for now, and if we have information we’ll release it like we do in other cases,” said police.
