Barrhaven’s 35-year tradition of celebrating Canada Day with an alcohol-free, outdoor community party was threatened by teenagers who disrupted the event this year, says the city councillor for the area.
Coun. Jan Harder tweeted a message calling the teenagers “a bunch of irresponsible losers.”
Ottawa police say they arrested and then released a 15-year-old boy in connection with the disruption.
Social media posts indicate some teenagers were throwing firecrackers in the crowd where people gathered to enjoy fireworks at Clarke Fields Park on Sunday evening.
Harder tweeted that the “losers” came to the Canada Day Party with “1 purpose.” She didn’t elaborate on the purpose, but added: “Who are they?” In reply to another person on twitter, Harder said she intended to find out where the youths lived.
Harder also suggested that searches my be required at the Canada Day festivities as well as an increase in paid police officers.
Search will dissuade them from trying…also need signage advising of searches-this would be private security with police as assistance for people who go criminal or violate a trespass act….will need paid duty officers increase
Need a security advisor on the Canada Day Board

The Barrhaven Canada Day party included live music, a midway, three stages, games for kids, and fireworks in the evening.
