按传统，自由党不在这次补选中派出候选人的，这叫'leader's courtesy'：反对党党魁在进议会的选举中，执政党和其他党派不派出候选人，让其顺利当选。自由党没有派出候选人against Stephen Harper in a byelection as Canadian Alliance leader in 2002; or against Stockwell Day when he was the Alliance leader in 2000; or when Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark launched his parliamentary come-back in the same year.

这次补选，Green leader Elizabeth May has already extended the courtesy to NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh。那么为什么自由党这次打破传统，并且在Karen Wang之后，一定要派出一名候选人呢？

OTTAWA -- Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May (MP, Saanich-Gulf Islands) is urging the Liberal Party to belatedly follow the Green Party’s lead in extending the leader’s courtesy to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh by not running a candidate against him in the upcoming Burnaby South by-election.

“The Liberals did the right thing when their candidate, Karen Wang, stepped aside after making racial comments about the NDP Leader,” said Ms. May. “It’s not too late for them to do the right thing again. Let Jagmeet Singh run unopposed in the Burnaby-South by-election.

“There’s a long tradition in our parliamentary democracy of not opposing leaders of federal parties so they can have their voice heard in Parliament. Stéphane Dion extended it to me in 2008 and the courtesy has been extended to former leaders such as Joe Clark, Stockwell Day, Stephen Harper, Jean Chrétien and Robert Stanfield.”

Mr. Singh accepted Ms. May’s offer of the leader’s courtesy last August.
