Baron Name Meaning
English and French: from the title of nobility, Middle English, Old French baron, barun (of Germanic origin; compare Barnes 2). As a surname it is unlikely to be a status name denoting a person of rank. The great baronial families of Europe had distinctive surnames of their own. Generally, the surname referred to service in a baronial household or was acquired as a nickname by a peasant who had ideas above his station. The title was also awarded to certain freemen of the cities of London and York and of the Cinque Ports. Compare the Scottish form Barron. English and French: from an Old French personal name Baro (oblique case Baron), or else referred to service in a baronial household or was acquired as a nickname by a peasant who had ideas above his station. German: status name for a freeman or baron, barun ‘imperial or church official’, a loan word in Middle High German from Old French (see 1). Spanish (Barón): from the title barón ‘baron’ (see 1). Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Bearáin (see Barnes). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): ornamental name meaning ‘baron’, from German, Polish, or Russian. In Israel the surname is often interpreted, by folk etymology, as being from Bar-On ‘son of strength’.

The mother of a 13-year-old boy who disappeared last week wants to use the goodwill the case unleashed to help more families of missing people.

“We are going to use what happened to him and make it a positive,” said Heidi Hardy, the mother of Alexandre Baron, a Grade 9 student at St. Francis Xavier High School who vanished on the afternoon Oct. 22 after school when he had a dispute with his mother over doing chores and homework.

The disappearance sparked a search that lasted days and enlisted the voluntary aid of dozens of people. Alexandre’s body was found early Saturday evening. Foul play is not suspected.

Ottawa Police put out a missing persons bulletin two days after Alexandre’s disappearance asking for the public’s help locating him. By that time people who had heard of his disappearance through social media had mounted a search and combed through wooded areas near Alexandre’s home in Blossom Park. His family printed up hundreds of posters that were distributed all over the city and across Canada.

“Total strangers can help you find someone. The authorities did what they could, they just didn’t have the manpower,” said Hardy. “I know what we need to do, I just don’t know how to do it. We need to help all of those people who need that help and support.”

Hardy could not sit still and wait for Alexandre to come home. Volunteers aided in the ground search, walking through the forested area that stretches between Albion Road and Uplands Drive, as well as the wooded areas around Sawmill Creek Public School and St. Francis Xavier. Hardy searched through ravines and ditches and the Sawmill Creek, which runs near the family’s home. She even reviewed footage from a convenience store near her home.

Social media was a great asset in Hardy’s case and many friends shared her call for help. But not everyone is lucky enough to have the same support system, she said.

Hardy has been overwhelmed by the support of family, friends and complete strangers, and said she is grateful that so many other people have shared their stories of loss.

“Look how many people came together for my son,” said a tearful Hardy on Tuesday. “Not a lot of people are blessed with that same community support. I saw people from my past and people from my present. It was amazing how many people had goodness in their hearts. I want to be able to share that blessing with other people.”

About 20 or 30 people have come together to discuss how to use the community spirit that coalesces when someone is in need without any cost, said Hardy.

And while she can’t say what the exact mechanism might be to achieve her goal, she believes people will be able to come up with a proposal for a way to help other people in need, especially those who don’t have an extensive social network to call upon.

“We will be using the light Alex gave the world to help the authorities so anyone searching for a missing person can find them, no matter what the age or the reason,” said Hardy.

“So many people are good. We need a way to show that good is there.”

Hardy describes her son as a caring teen who loved the outdoors, a gangly teen who had just cropped his hair so he could join the army cadets.

“His light is shining through us. And it’s our time to bring that good into the world.”

A funeral service will be held for Alexandre Baron on Saturday. Details have not been finalized. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family.
