SNC-Lavalin awarded contract from China National Nuclear Power for pre-project work for the proposed 2-unit Advanced Heavy Water Reactor new build project in China

MISSISSAUGA: December 2, 2019 - SNC-Lavalin is pleased to announce its wholly-owned subsidiary Candu Energy Inc., has been awarded a contract by China National Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. (CNNP) for pre-project work on the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR). CNNP is actively promoting the construction of two AHWRs in China in or around 2021. The pre-project activities pertain to planning and licensing in preparation for the AHWR project.
SNC-Lavalin will produce the top-level licensing basis document (LBD) to outline the licensing process along with the regulatory and safety requirements applicable to the design, analysis, construction, commissioning and operation of the AHWR. The AHWR is a 700 MW Generation III reactor that builds on legacy CANDU® tradition. A number of evolutionary adaptations ensure its compliance with the latest international safety standards and Generation III requirements. This includes new and enhanced active and passive safety systems and standardized design for reduced maintenance and capital costs.
SNC-Lavalin will prepare Safety Design Guides (SDG) and a description and assessment of the agreed to safety-related design changes. SNC-Lavalin will also review SDGs prepared by partner agencies involved.

CNNP is the developer and operator of several nuclear plants in China and the majority owner of Qinshan, the site of two CANDU nuclear power plants. SNC-Lavalin is the exclusive licensee of the CANDU technology from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and hence, the experienced expert to execute the scope set out in the awarded contract.
Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute Co. Ltd. (SNERDI) serves as General Design Institute of project, and as technical manager for this contract to review and accept SNC-Lavalin’s deliverables on behalf of CNNP. China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC) has been designated by CNNP as its foreign trade agent for this contract.
