More than 70% of coronavirus cases in China have recovered, WHO says

Of the 80,000 confirmed coronavirus cases reported in China, "more than 70% have recovered and been discharged," according to the World Health Organization (WHO) in a news conference on Monday.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed the outbreak in his opening remarks, saying it's important to remember "of all the cases reported globally so far, 93% are from just four countries."

The director-general emphasized that the situation can still be controlled.

"The bottom line is," Tedros said, "we are not at the mercy of this virus."

Authorities in mainland China identified 19 new coronavirus cases on Monday, according to the country's National Health Commission (NHC).

Seventeen of those cases were in Wuhan, the capital of hard-hit Hubei province and epicenter of the pandemic, and two were imported cases from people arriving overseas.

Seventeen deaths were reported in Hubei province on Monday, bringing the total number of fatalities in China to 3,136.

China has now identified 80,754 coronavirus patients, according to the NHC. Nearly 60,000 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Monday marked the third straight day in which China reported zero locally transmitted cases outside of Hubei.

新华社北京3月12日电（记者罗鑫、马岩）在12日召开的北京市新型冠状病毒肺炎疫情防控工作新闻发布会上，北京市政府外事办公室副主任李轶表示，北京拟向首尔、德黑兰、东京、横滨捐赠防疫物资，为他们抗击疫情助一臂之力。

李轶说，近一段时间，我国新冠肺炎疫情得到有效遏制，但疫情在海外迅速蔓延。我们了解到，首尔、德黑兰、东京、横滨等城市也面临着防控工作的巨大挑战，出现部分防控物资紧张的情况。国际友好城市的疫情牵动着北京市民的心。北京市以大国首都的责任担当，在保证本市防控需要的前提下，决定向上述四城市捐赠防疫物资，为他们抗击疫情助一臂之力。

据介绍，北京市拟捐赠物品包括：隔离衣20万件、手套10万副、鞋套20万双、一次性医用帽20万个、手消毒凝胶6800瓶、核酸检测试剂盒5000人份、温测智能识别设备25台、有创与无创一体治疗型呼吸机2台；中成药制剂2000盒。

李轶表示，疫情发生以来，北京的国际友好城市纷纷通过不同方式表达了对奋战在一线的医务工作者的敬意，对北京市民的慰问。“这些来信、声援和捐赠，充分展示了友城和相关国际组织对中国、对北京的信心，和与我们同舟共济、抗击疫情的决心。我们对此深表感谢，也铭记在心。”

据不完全统计，截至目前，北京市共收到国外中央和地方政府捐赠的各类口罩113万个、防护服22万件、手套75万副、手术服1.7万件、防水衣4.4万件、护目镜3700副、防护面罩90个、热感成像仪40台。

3月11日消息，马云在微博表示，第一批助力欧洲防疫的物资今日下午到达比利时列日机场。而由马云公益基金会和阿里巴巴公益基金会筹集的180万个口罩和10万个病毒检测试剂盒将很快到达，分别从这里捐赠给意大利、西班牙等疫情严重的国家。

在这个位于湖北咸宁咸安区官埠桥镇的渔场，人们正把一尾尾刚从水中打捞而起、仍扑腾着水花的花鲢装车。运送的目的地，是因新冠肺炎疫情而牵动着无数人心弦的江城武汉。

按照调配计划，货车分赴不同社区。贺盛彪驾驶“9003”，驶向硚口区丰美社区。抵达时，武汉市消防救援支队硚口大队的“119党员突击队”队员们早已在路旁等候。

“我们接到社区的消息后，就立即组织了突击队员等一共120人，来帮着一起为居民配送。”硚口大队教导员占永良说。

“咸宁是鱼米之乡，水产资源丰富。咸宁和武汉山水相依，有着深厚的感情。”咸宁市政府副市长谭海华说，此次面对疫情，咸宁和武汉也是共患难。“在疫情最关键的阶段，云南省对口支援咸宁，同时，河北等省份也对咸宁给予了有力的支持。”

谭海华说，此次百里送鱼，也是希望把爱心传递，支持武汉早日战胜疫情。

中午1时许，卸完了鱼，运输车辆陆续开始返程。按照咸宁市与武汉市商定的相关安排，更多鲜鱼，还将陆续“游”上武汉不同区域更多市民的餐桌。
迎着初春的阳光，运输车驶向南方。车前悬挂的“武汉必胜、天下咸宁”八个大字，格外醒目。

Jack Ma, Chinese entrepreneur and founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba, used his first tweet to post a photo of a massive donation of face masks and coronavirus testing kits.
The donated goods are on their way to the United States, Ma said on Twitter, courtesy of the Jack Ma Foundation.

"The first shipment of masks and coronavirus test kits to the US is taking off from Shanghai. All the best to our friends in America," Ma said in his very first post on his official Twitter account.

According to an earlier post from the foundation, the shipment included about 500,000 coronavirus testing kits and a million face masks.

Amazon will fill 100,000 new positions due to surge in online orders

Amazon said it will be hiring people for 100,000 new full-time and part-time jobs in the US to meet a surge in online orders as people avoid public areas during the coronavirus outbreak.

In a post on Amazon’s corporate blog, the company is inviting people who may lose their current jobs in the hospitality and travel industries to consider working for Amazon temporarily.

Amazon said it also will be raising pay by $2 per hour through the end of April for employees dealing with the increased demand, with similar increases for workers outside the US. The company said the temporary pay hike for hourly employees will cost Amazon over $350 million in the US, Canada and Europe.
