The City is consulting the public on four proposals to:

  • Name the parkland at 1 Cedarhill Drive in Barrhaven the Tom Schonberg Park
  • Rename Banner Park in Knoxdale-Merivale the George Brancato Park
  • Rename the Harmer Pedestrian Bridge in Kitchissippi the Jackie Holzman Bridge
  • Name the recreation area in Centennial Park in Rideau-Goulbourn the David Arntfield Recreation Area

Tom Schonberg Park (Ward 3 – Barrhaven)

In recognition of Tom Schonberg’s extensive community service, the City has been asked to name the parkland at 1 Cedarhill Drive the Tom Schonberg Park. Mr. Schonberg was the president and CEO of the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He was committed to the development, modernization and innovation of health care. A driving force behind multiple projects at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Mr. Schonberg helped increase diagnostics services, open a state-of-the-art birthing centre, develop the Acute Care for the Elderly unit and expand the emergency department with 10 new operating rooms, new ambulatory and rehabilitation centres, a physiotherapy centre and a 15-station Hemodialysis unit.

George Brancato Park (Ward 9 – Knoxdale-Merivale)

In recognition of George Brancato’s significance to Ottawa’s football community by leading the Ottawa Rough Riders to a Grey Cup victory in 1976, the City has been asked to rename Banner Park, located at 90 Banner Road, the George Brancato Park. A proud resident of Trend-Arlington, Mr. Brancato participated in three Grey Cup wins: as a player in 1960, an assistant coach in 1973 and head coach in 1976.

Jackie Holzman Bridge (Ward 15 – Kitchissippi)

In recognition of Jackie Holzman’s exceptional community service, the City has been asked to rename the Harmer Pedestrian Bridge, connecting Harmer Avenue North and Harmer Avenue South, the Jackie Holzman Bridge. Mrs. Holzman is a passionate accessibility advocate, devoting her efforts to improve housing and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. She was the first Jewish woman and third woman to become Mayor of Ottawa. She worked tirelessly during her time at City Hall to bridge differences between communities and to unite residents around important issues. Mrs. Holzman continues to improve the community, co-founding Compassionate Ottawa to help people live as long and as well as they can.

David Arntfield Recreation Area (Ward 21 – Rideau-Goulbourn)

In recognition of David Arntfield’s extensive community service, the City has been asked to name the recreation area within Centennial Park, located at 5572 Doctor Leach Drive, the David Arntfield Recreation Area. A proud resident of Manotick, Mr. Arntfield was a dedicated community volunteer. As the competitive convenor for the Osgoode-Rideau Minor Hockey Association, he was responsible for getting team sponsorships and leading annual fundraising efforts. As a member of the executive committee of the Ottawa Ride For Dad Prostate Cancer Awareness campaigns from 2009 to 2019, he helped raise more than $4 million for local research and awareness. Known as a master fundraiser, Mr. Arntfield volunteered for many fundraising and recreational sponsorship activities, playing a key role in acquiring $890,000 in federal funding to expand the Manotick Arena in 2017.
