A total of 38 residents have died of COVID-related illness at Carlingview Manor, according to a letter to families.

There have been a total of 137 resident cases since the outbreak began, according to an update from the home’s executive director Matt Carroll.

“Every day, our staff members work tirelessly to fight against this insidious virus,” Carroll wrote.

“We worry endlessly about the health and safety of our residents and of each other. Thank you for the ongoing support we receive from you. It helps to keep our spirits up during this devastating time.”

Carlingview also had two new cases among staff members as of Thursday, bringing the total number of cases among staff to 73. There have been no new cases since then, according to Carroll.

Staff members who have shown symptoms or tested positive have been isolated at home. Of the staff who have tested positive, 11 have recovered and one has returned to work.

Charlie Senack, whose grandmother is a resident on the third floor of the home, said his family has been fortunate that his grandmother’s floor is COVID-free.

He said he has nothing but praise for the nursing staff, who have answered questions from family members and provided updates.

As testing was ramping up, the increasing numbers of positive results have been anxiety-provoking, he said.

“Every time we get an email, it’s upsetting. There are more than 30 families who are grieving,” he said.

Senack said he and his family have relied on information provided by Carlingview, but he has been disappointed that the company that operates the home has also not updated their numbers.

Carlingview is run by Mississauga-based Revera Inc., which operates one of the largest networks of accommodation, care and services for seniors in North America.

In a statement, Revera said Carlingview is receiving assistance from the Queensway Carleton Hospital. A team from the hospital has been deployed to help support the residents and staff at the home including registered nurses, registered practical nurses, patient care aides, an infection prevention and control expert, an occupational health director and a clinical manager.

Carlingview has worked with Ottawa Public Health since the outbreak was declared and is following strict pandemic outbreak protocols and infection control practices, including full PPE for all staff providing care for residents in isolation, said Larry Roberts, Revera’s senior manager of corporate affairs in a statement.

“We are doing enhanced cleaning at Carlingview Manor. High touch surfaces like handrails and doors, and resident rooms, common areas, staff rooms are receiving more frequent cleaning,” he said.

“We have adjusted our mealtime and recreation activities to promote physical distancing. Meals for residents in isolation areas are served meals in their rooms. The other residents are served meals at multiple seatings in dining rooms to maximize physical distancing while allowing the staff to provide supervision and assistance as required for safety.

“Group recreation programs have been replaced by one-on-one activities to maintain social engagement.”

Roberts said Revera is reaching out to families as often as possible with phone calls and emails.

In a letter to residents and family members posted Wednesday, Revera’s chief medical officer, Dr. Rhonda Collins, said Revera examines every outbreak situation carefully, looking to learn from the experience and prevent further spread.

“We talk about what small thing may have made a difference in one home, and how we can apply it to others. It is very serious work, taken very seriously.”

According to Ottawa Public Health, as of Wednesday there were outbreaks in 24 institutions in Ottawa, including hospitals, long-term care homes and retirement homes.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Health, there have been 1,150 resident deaths in the province’s long-term care homes.

"Carlingview has worked with Ottawa Public Health since the outbreak was declared..." Where was Ottawa Public Health BEFORE the outbreak was declared? Why were the LTC homes not isolated at the beginning of this crisis by the City and the Province? Where's the accountability? Shame!

My mother is a resident at Carlingview Manor. It upsets me when I continue to hear negative comments concerning LTC homes. I can not speak for the other homes out there, however my experience with Carlingview Manor has been nothing but positive. I am consulted regularly from the staff about everything from medication changes, behavior issues, hearing aide issues, etc. My mother is receiving excellent care, and the staff have always been available to assist me in any way required. Matt Carroll, Executive Director, has been working over and above what is required of him, throughout this pandemic. Even prior to this, Matt would attend some of the Family Council meetings to make himself available for comments and suggestions. Keep up the great work Carlingview Staff. We appreciate it.

I worked LTC as RN after needing a break from working ICU. When I first started LTC, I couldn’t believe how hard staff worked and how many residents each staff were responsible for. RPNs had to give meds/do dressings/treatments for 42 residents. PSWs had to provide care for at least 10 residents each.
Staff/resident ratios at LTC have not changed in decades. I can only hope that COVID will make government realize that residents in LTC need more staff day to day, not just during a pandemic,to help meet their basic needs.

看这条消息的时候时间段特别重要。大部分人是我们这刚爆发的时候感染。那里环境相对密闭。护工的防护意识也没有专业医护人员强。现在专业人员进驻,情况得到改善。

The number of long-term care homes with active COVID-19 outbreaks fell slightly in provincial figures reported Sunday, but another 35 Ontario residents have died since the day before.
The total number of Ontario deaths from the virus now stands at 1,634, out of a total number of 20,238 confirmed cases, according to the daily summary from the Ontario government.

There have been 14,772 resolved cases.

There is a little good news for long-term care homes, many of which have had a wave of infections. As of Sunday, there were 172 homes with outbreaks, down from 175 the day before. (An outbreak is defined as at least one confirmed case.)

However 1,235 residents of these homes have died, making up more than three-quarters of the COVID-19 deaths in Ontario.

Another 58 homes had outbreaks that are now listed as “resolved.”

There are 2,727 active cases among long-term care residents and 1,693 among staff. Both those figures are down by about two per cent from the previous day.

Women continue to outnumber men sharply in confirmed cases, by 11,582 to 8,494. (Some cases are not listed by gender.)

There have been 17,618 tests completed since the previous day, for a running total of 433,994.

Meanwhile there were 961 people hospitalized with COVID-19 — down 55 from a day earlier. Of these, 195 were in intensive care and 140 were on ventilators, both slight drops from the day before.
