38 COVID-19 deaths at Carlingview Manor

:wall:

They came to clap, cheer, bang and, in Jasmine the therapy dog’s case, bark their support for the beleaguered staff and residents of Carlingview Manor.

“We miss coming here,” said Jasmine’s owner, Ann Heide, as she joined several dozen others outside of the Carling Avenue long-term care home Friday morning. “We’ve been coming here every Tuesday for three years. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about them. We have a lot of friends here. She has a lot of friends here. They give her so much love and so much food.”

The 303-bed Carlingview Manor has been among the Ottawa care homes hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ninety-three residents and 61 staff members have tested positive for the disease. Thirty-nine residents have died.

“These residents aren’t just residents. They’re our family,” said Melissa Dioguardi, a nurse who used to work at Carlingview and organized Friday’s show of support, which comes during National Nursing Week.

“We’re their family. And when we lose one, it hits us hard,” Dioguardi said, her voice cracking with emotion.

More than 1,300 Ontario long-term care residents have died in the pandemic, accounting for nearly three out of every four total COVID-19 deaths in the province. A Toronto law firm has filed a $50-million class action suit against Revera, which operates Carlingview Manor and about 500 other long-term care homes in North America and the United Kingdom.

But Dioguardi had nothing but praise for her former colleagues, many of whom, clad in masks and face shields, joined Carlingview residents to wave from the upper floor windows.

“So often, the focus is on the negative,” Dioguardi said. “These staff members go above and beyond. If there’s a resident who has no family, they’ll go out and do their groceries or bring in a TV for them. It may not be a beautiful home and there may be things that aren’t great aesthetically, but for everything that’s not aesthetic, they make up for with their absolute passion and their love.”

One of Friday’s cheering crew was John Whelan, who pounded on an aluminum bowl from the sidewalk. Whelan’s brother, Richard, lives on Carlingview’s fifth floor.

“I miss him,” Whelan said. “He did get COVID at the beginning of the pandemic, but he’s now beyond that and in the recovery phase. I phoned him last night and told him I’d be downstairs at 10 o’clock banging on my popcorn bowl.

“He’s in pretty good spirits. We were talking about Little Richard’s passing. He’s a huge Little Richard fan. He’s a 50s guy. He likes Little Richard and Elvis Presley. Music is something that connects us.”

Dioguardi said she’ll keep coming back to Carlingview Manor to show her support for as long as it takes for the pandemic to end.

“I hope they know they’re loved and they’re supported and they’re doing a great job,” she said. “I want everyone to see the positive. They make me proud.”
