The City has introduced a new way to vote in the 2020 Cumberland By-election, using a Special Mail-in Ballot.
To take advantage of this option, you can apply online until Sunday, September 13 at 5 pm. You can also apply to receive a Special Mail-in Ballot by:
Once your application has been processed, we will mail you a Special Ballot Voter Kit the week of September 14. The kit will contain step-by-step instructions on how to vote, a voter declaration form, a ballot, a ballot secrecy envelope and a prepaid return envelope.
Once you complete your special ballot, you can mail it back to us using the prepaid return envelope, or you can drop it off in person before Monday, October 5 at 4:30 pm, either at the Elections Office or the Orléans Client Service Centre at 255 Centrum Boulevard.
Special ballots received after Monday, October 5 at 4:30 pm will not be counted.
Eligible electors will still have two other ways to vote. In-person voting will take place during Advance Vote Days on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday, September 29, and on Voting Day on Monday October 5, from 10 am until 8 pm.
Voting places will offer anywhere voting, meaning you can vote at any voting place, regardless of your address. You can find your nearest voting place by using the Where do I Vote? tool. They include:
We are working with Ottawa Public Health and safety measures will be in place at voting places to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Everyone will be required to wear masks, in accordance with the City’s Temporary Mandatory Mask By-law, and we will limit the number of electors allowed inside a voting place. We will also have physical-distancing markers, hand sanitizing stations, single use stationery and acrylic barriers in place. Disposable masks will be available at voting places should an elector not have one.
You can also vote by proxy. If you can’t go to a voting place, or if you are not feeling well, you can appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf. A proxy must be an eligible elector and someone you trust to mark your ballot the way you have instructed them to. Proxies can vote for only one other person besides themselves, unless they are representing members of their own family.
To appoint someone, you and your proxy must fill out two copies of the Appointment for Voting Proxy (Form 3) and have them certified by City staff. To certify the forms, the proxy can bring them to a voting place on voting days, or to the Elections Office or an open Client Service Centre from September 8 until October 5, by appointment only.
