Earlier, Nachman Ash, national coordinator on the pandemic had said that Pfizer's vaccine was "less effective than we had thought".

Israel launched a vaccination drive on December 19 with a focus on the elderly, those with risky medical conditions and some emergency workers. More than a quarter of its citizens have now received the Pfizer Inc. vaccine, health officials say.

About a quarter of Israelis have received their first vaccine shot and 3.5 per cent already got their second dose.

Since the rollout of vaccinations one month ago, the Jewish state had inoculated more than 2.2 million of its nine million inhabitants, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said Tuesday.
Still, the country is in its third lockdown with infection rates remaining high. More than half a million cases have been reported and 4,005 people have died in Israel since the pandemic began.

The rise in infections, despite the lockdown and vaccinations, has been attributed to virus mutations and disregard by some people of restrictions on assembly.

In return for rapid delivery of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Israel has committed to sharing with the US-German manufacturer its data on the effects of the mass immunisation.

以色列自去年12月底开始注射新冠疫苗开始，接种速度一直保持世界第一，但2月7日前后，被阿拉伯联合酋长国（UAE）赶超，以色列排到了第二位。那么，UAE的接种速度领跑全球的秘诀是什么呢？

据统计网站Our World in Data称，以7日为基准，UAE总人口中至少接种一次疫苗的国民占比为41.1%，超过了占比为40.2%的以色列，位列全球第一。而此前，以色列一直在该比例上处于全球领先地位，如今被UAE反超。

UAE制定的目标是在第一季让总人口977万中的五成接种疫苗，按照目前的速度，有望顺利达成目标。而从每百人中的单日接种人数（以7日为基准）来看，UAE为1.42人，同样位列全球第一，以色列以1.11人位列第二。在该指标上，此前也是由以色列占据第一，如今也被UAE反超。

UAE之所以能够快速提高疫苗接种速度，秘诀是凭借雄厚的资金实力提前购置了大量的疫苗。UAE从去年12月23日开始接种辉瑞和德国生物技术共同研发的疫苗，比欧盟还要快3至4天。随后，从1月底开始同时接种中国的国药疫苗和俄罗斯的卫星V疫苗。接种速度自然比只接种辉瑞疫苗的以色列更快

UAE不排斥中国疫苗，从去年6月开始便早早地在本国进行中国国药疫苗的临床试验。

尤其，UAE还自行确认了，中国国药疫苗在本国进行的三期临床试验结果为86%。去年12月，UAE批准了国药疫苗，1月批准了卫星V疫苗，并从1月底开始，将这两种疫苗与辉瑞一起同时投入接种。UAE没有出现欧美国家正在经历的疫苗短缺现象。

UAE在卫生部官网的首页，亲切地告知民众离家近的接种中心和预约方法。加之，UAE的核心国家迪拜计划近期推出针对高龄人群的上门接种服务，外界期待UAE的接种速度还将得到进一步提高。待因行动不便而不愿出门接种疫苗的高龄人群完成接种后，针对年轻人的接种工作将更快得到推进。

以色列对疫苗的效果进行了科学的分析，我有两篇博文展示了以色列在不同时期报告的结果，一次是十万余例，一次是40万余，与同时不接种人群比较，保护率都在90%以上。虽然不是双盲随机对照试验，但样本数那么大，还是很有说服力的。

但反对意见还是有的，比较引人注目的论点是，虽然以色列试验证明有效，但每日感染率并无显著减少。有人甚至又拿阴谋论来说事。但阿联酋的数据倒可以成为反驳这些说法的一个依据。

从以色列的数据看，2/7比1/16的新发病人数明显减少约20%，但死亡数无明显减少。但对比阿联酋的数据，2/7比1/16的新发病人数无明显变化，但死亡数反而有所增加。

两国地域接近，人口相近，阿联酋也是个富国，两国经济发达程度相近，疫苗接种程度相同，唯以色列完全使用了辉瑞疫苗，而阿联酋除了辉瑞疫苗外，也使用了中俄的疫苗。

从新发病人数来看，以色列有了明显改善，再加它做了更有说服力的比较试验，应该证明了疫苗是有效的。至于死亡率依然高企，这里的原因很多，而且新冠感染在多数死亡病人中并不是唯一死因，而是加重因素，并且病例数并不多，并不能以此指标否认疫苗的作用。

而阿联酋在新发病和死亡率两个指标上都无改善，它也未作比较试验。似乎从数据看，中俄的疫苗效果并不比单用辉瑞疫苗来的好。

两国将很快完成全员接种，那时候，世界将得到一个有说服力的关于疫苗效果的大样本的证据，同时也可以说明哪一种疫苗更好。由于病毒变种也蔓延到了那里，两国的实际抗疫效果也是对疫苗对抗新变种的实际考验！

Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine sharply reduces symptomatic Covid-19 in the real world, Israeli researchers say​

Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine appears to reduce symptomatic coronavirus infections by more than 90% in the real world, Israeli researchers said Sunday.

The findings, while preliminary, suggest that the vaccine remains remarkably effective in a mass vaccination campaign -- outside the carefully controlled conditions of a clinical trial.

The Clalit Research Institute, part of a large Israeli health system, analyzed data on 1.2 million people, about half of whom had received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Researchers compared patients who received the vaccine with similar individuals who hadn't.

The rate of symptomatic Covid-19 -- meaning people who were infected with the coronavirus and felt sick -- decreased by 94% among people who received two doses of the vaccine, according to a press release from Clalit. The rate of serious illness decreased by 92%.

Full details of the study weren't immediately available, and the research hasn't yet been peer-reviewed. Still, the findings are consistent with data from Pfizer's own vaccine trial, which found that the vaccine conferred 95% protection against symptomatic Covid-19.

In the Pfizer trial, researchers randomly assigned patients to receive either the vaccine or a placebo. Then they looked to see how many people got sick in each group, and found that the vaccine sharply reduced illness.

Pfizer's study was a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard in clinical research. The Israeli study, on the other hand, was observational, meaning researchers didn't randomly pick who got the vaccine and who didn't.

That can pose problems; people who choose to get vaccinated, for example, may also be more likely to take other steps to protect themselves.

Researchers said they tried to account for those types of effects, however. And observational studies are important because they can offer certain insight into how well vaccines protect people under real-world conditions.
