Firefighters rescue man clinging to ledge at Hog's Back Falls​

Ottawa firefighters rescued a man in his 20s who was clinging to a ledge at the bottom of a rock face at Hog’s Back Falls on Sunday night in an operation that took 45 minutes.

Firefighters received a report of a person in distress at 9:43 p.m. and were on the scene to begin a search of the area three minutes later.

The rescue team was able to see the faint glow of a cell phone at the bottom of the rock face in the centre of the Rideau River.

The water in the main channel at that part of the river moves so quickly that it is difficult to stand, say firefighters.

Water rescue technicians made their way to the man and found that he was half in the fast-moving water in the main channel, clinging to a rocky ledge.

The rescue team brought the man to higher ground and equipped him with a personal floatation device and helmet and secured him to safety lines before he was brought across a section of moving water to reach the shore, where a rope rescue team had set up a system to raise him up the steep banks of the river.

He had suffered minor cuts and bruises and was transferred to the care of the Ottawa Paramedic Service at 10:30 p.m. and taken to hospital to be checked out.

Firefighters remind residents that the Hog’s Back area contains steep rocks and powerful currents. Visitors to the area should follow all posted signs and not venture into any unauthorized areas. If you are visiting with children make sure you are within arms reach at all times.

Another man, Jesse Tessier, 24, died after falling in to the fast-moving water near Hog’s Back Falls on May 15 around 7 p.m.

Emergency responders searched the area for four days.

Tessier’s body was found floating near the falls on May 25.
