As a city, we’re blessed to be influenced by many different elements that make us unique. We’re:
To reflect our city’s diversity and to highlight stories, histories, cultures, communities and legacies, we’re looking to develop a renewed commemoration and naming policy that can be more reflective of who we are. We want an updated, comprehensive, fair and effective municipal policy to unify and guide our commemoration activities, and to support our unique position in the world.
An advisory group has been established to provide high-level guidance and support in developing a new policy. Find out more about them.
A Host Nation Engagement Session has been held, and representatives from the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation have provided recommendations..
And there will be several other opportunities for residents to get involved including:

- built on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabe Host Nation,
- home to a diversity of urban First Nations, Inuit and Métis residents,
- rich with equity-deserving and immigrant communities,
- a unique landscape of neighbouring urban, suburban, and rural lifestyles,
- a medium-sized North American city with equal promotion of English and French cultures,
- an arena for daily cultural exchanges between the provinces of Ontario and Québec, and the National Capital of Canada.

- Indigenous engagement activities will be organized to receive input from Urban First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals and communities in Ottawa
- A bilingual public engagement session will be held to build awareness and to receive resident input and feedback
- You can also provide feedback on our EngageOttawa page - Throughout the summer and fall we will include surveys targeted towards Ottawa residents on key questions related to the policy
