虽然老美第一个提出这个技术，但是资金问题没有继续。中国近年花了超过5亿美元研究并打算投入实用。
一个英国科学家说：

“We are going to learn so much new science,” agrees Simon Middleburgh, a nuclear materials scientist at Bangor University, UK. “If they would let me, I’d be on the first plane there.”

但在1973年，美國政府突然叫停所有與釷燃料發電有關的實驗，理由為鈾燃料增殖反應爐更有效率，其副產品也可用作製造武器。

我最近才知道钍燃料这个代替品，使我十分惊奇。它自二战后便得到发展，但却因缺乏武器用途而被摒弃。

thorium 资源丰富，但是分布比较均匀，不集中，常常作为其他矿产品的副产品存在。因为辐射性，所以，是富集态的核废料。是负资产。

其能量价值比铀低得多。所以，开发th反应堆，难度大。成本高。如果没有到山穷水尽的情况，一般就是掩埋处理，掩埋成本实在太高了，才需要考虑th的应用。

中国的Th很多来自稀土生产的副产品。负资产很庞大。最核燃料，不一定靠发电赚钱，但是可以消减负资产。
