De Maupassant wrote the story “Was It a Dream” in the first person. By using this point of view he wants his readers to see what his character sees, feel what the character feels; and therefore achieve the purpose of smoothing the revelation of his character, and enhancing the credence of the story.
The readers can relate to the character better if they know exactly what the character knows. The readers can be easily absorbed in the story because what they read is what the narrator senses, as if they are experiencing the events along with the narrator. This smooths the revelation of the character because the readers see the story through the character’s eyes. What is important is the story being told, not the existence of the narrator himself. As a matter of fact, most of the time the readers just neglect the existence of the narrator because the readers and the narrator are essentially one person: they share the same vision, hearing, feeling and thoughts. De Maupassant used the first person point of view because he wants the readers to forget about his character, he wants them to feel what his character feels instead of telling them how he feels.
By using the first person point of view, De Maupassant also achieves the goal of enhancing the credence of the story. In “Was It a Dream”, there are descriptions of some incredible scenes and events. But the readers do not question about them because they are seen through the narrator’s eyes. This is based on the concept that “seeing is believing”, the readers assume the truth of the events because “somebody” has seen them. And that “somebody” is the narrator, a man in the shadow, whose existence is ignored, a result from the usage of the first person point of view
