The Army of Millions Who Enforce China’s Zero-Covid Policy, at All Costs

太多了,美国人民看得很清楚, 谢谢美国人民,居然码了这么多字,地道的本土英文,学了很多英文金句,本人被感动到了

* If it were not for the lockdown the virus could have spread very fast similar to US. At that speed hospitals will run out of space soon plus not enough ventilators, thousand of people could die, much more serious than ‘women who lost her baby’ and ‘man who died from heart attack’. China has huge population and limited medical resource which is why they are doing zero Covid policy. Sure there are minor consequences, but overall it’s to protect people and it is working.

* From a selfish perspective i have to applaud what china is doing. With so many people if the covid go unchecked like in india or south africa we would run through the greek alphabet much quicker and much sooner, with probability high of running into something more contagious and problematic than omicron. Realistically given so many people died in US, im really not in the mood to criticize any other country’s covid effort. Its truly a moment of introspection and collaboration, rather than hackling.

* I really really wish that people could get beyond an us versus them attitude. And columns like this certainly don't help. To those expressing dismay and disgust that others seem to be supporting China and her "draconian" or "authoritarian" approaches, please answer some questions for me. 1- Are mitigation and containment measures desirable? ( if you think "no" because run it by a nurse). 2- If yes, is collective action required? 3- If yes, can a democracy produce the necessary action? 4- If yes, how? But seriously, we need to answer #4 because if we can't answer that, we are acknowledging that democracy does not work for real world challenges. We need to acknowledge that the stuff that China is having her citizens do is effective for containment and mitigation. We don't have to agree with COVID zero, and we don't have to agree with how they get people to do the right thing, but we have to acknowledge that there are right things that need to be done collectively. And if we can't accept sticks as motivators, what are the carrots at our disposal and how do we use them? Or do we accept that everyone gets to choose their own reality regardless of how it impacts others? If so, we are not really a society, are we?

* I could not be more grateful to the Chinese for the way in which they have protected health and lives through this fearful pandemic. Chinese efforts have been heroic. Importantly, with more than 1.21 billion or 86.25% of mainland residents fully vaccinated now, the Chinese are near a theoretical herd immunity, and that tells me they will continue to be successful in limiting infections through the country.

* They just did something that other government were not able to do in order to protect their people's health and life.

* Maybe people in the USA have lost people they loved and hate living with COVID. Why is everyone so convinced that anyone who disagrees with their opinions on China is being paid? To me, that reeks the most of being completely conditioned by propaganda. You can’t even believe that someone could disagree with you in earnest. This country has failed at responding to this pandemic at every level. Why do you think we have any legroom to criticize China’s pandemic response?

*When I asked a Chinese friend what he thought of how China handles Covid compared to countries in the West, he replied. "When a Western country also has 1.5 Billion citizens to manage then we can really make that comparison'.

* If China "handled" COVID like the US, it would have been so much easier to criticize.

* We are blaming them for our own failures and continuing to do so will jeopardize the global cooperation that is required to deal with this and future
