The problem at the time being imo is Chinese Canadians have subjected to discrimination in many ways, lack of representation, glass ceiling, unnecessary questioning overt or covert on our loyalty, even physical harms due to worsening sino-west relations. Most of us come to Canada to escape injustice, suppression while seek freedom, free speech, better lives, better education etc., at the end we don't want to be subjected to unequal rights most Canadians have never experienced, and we want to enjoy the rishts supported by Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
You are right we should cherish individualism and freedom and we should seek candidates who can truly represent our interests on individual base, but at this point of time, imo, what we should be more concerned is to prevent the already toxic conditions for Chinese Canadians from falling deep into a rabbit hole due to Communist China's assertiveness, interference in other countries affairs, etc. We are unduly suffering because of that and we must prevent that from further worsening.
One way to help solve that problem is to achieve a rightful representation of Chinese Canadians in politics. So imo, vote for Chinese Canadian candidates so that we will be at added representation which can help make increased awareness.
For me for example, paying less tax, having favorable policies for multiple home owners etc, comes secondary.
