I have just finished final exams of those two course, and I would like to share with your guys a bit about my feelings towards those courses that maybe can help some of you decide whether or not to take them.
1. CMN1120--everyone can take CMN1120,as an elective or compulsory. It is about Canadian history of mass media and comminication. It is a very boring course (personal opinion) although the Prof try to make the course more interesting, it is still boring.
You basically don;t have to go to class, all you need to is to memorize the chapters before midterm and final exams. If you are good at memorizing names, dates, and events, who did what and when, then take this course, otherwise, don't mess up your brain
This course is a first year course, so it's relatively easy. Exams are MC and true/false, matching questions, so well, not so hard, but not so easy either, course u really have to know the exact answer, it's not something you can just b*llsh*t on and get partial marks. Personally, I feel that this course is an average in terms of level of difficulty. If you don't like to read English, or your English level is not good, don't take this course (unless you have to)coz you will have to READ A LOT, and you need actually understand what's going on in the texts. There is also Think Piece, it's worth 25%, 800-1000 words, given topics you can select from. This part is not so hard, you will just need to read a chapter and find some info on the web and then start b*llsh*it. Midterm worth 35% and final is 40%, so you really can't screw up any of them, otherwise, you can't get good marks. I believe, this course for us Chinese, you can't get A+ but you can't get below C+ either.
ADM3326--Advertising & Promotion
Required for marketing student, electived for ART, Social students, not accpeted for ENG/CS students.
I felt that this is a interesting course, you can learn a lot about promotions and advertising. The course is partially analysing real cases and partially lectures. You can participate in the disussion, in fact 10% of final marks are for class participation. You will have to have a group to do two assignment, one is to design an creative ad and one is for the whole promotion and strategy plan. So for the group, it's ok, not so hard to get good marks if all your members do their part. Both assignments are worth 20% each. Most of groups are in B's and A's for the assingment part. Midterm to analyze an ad, just follow the guidelines and you will do fine; it's worth 10%. Final exam is 3hours, which is not enough. You will have to do the entire analyze and develop an advertising and promotion plan. It's an open book exam, but you don't have the time to look for notes. If you attend all the classes, you will hvae no problem writting the exam which is worth 40%.
