TANZANIA, TANZANIA - The UN Security Council has scheduled a vote on an Arab-sponsored resolution calling for an urgent cessation of hostilities in Gaza to allow unhindered access to deliver humanitarian aid to the massive number of civilians in need of food, water, medicine and other essentials.

But diplomats said the text is still being negotiated to try to get the United States, Israel's closest ally, to abstain rather than veto the resolution.

This makes it likely that Monday's 5 p.m. EST vote could be delayed.

The U.S. vetoed a Security Council resolution earlier this month that was backed by almost all council members and dozens of other nations demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza.

UN Security Council to vote on Gaza tomorrow​

More now on the UN Security Council vote - which we now know has been postponed from tonight until tomorrow.

The vote on the Gaza draft resolution is now expected to take place at 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT) in New York.

The draft resolution has been put forward by the United Arab Emirates and is calling for an "urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza Strip".

UN Security Council vote on Gaza postponed​

The UN Security Council vote on the UAE's Gaza resolution calling for an “urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities" has been postponed until tomorrow.

It was due to be this evening but throughout the day there has been diplomatic wrangling over the proposal, with the motion being pushed back and back.

The US is said to be seeking to tone down the words of the draft resolution, which as it stands also demands that Israel and Hamas allow aid access to Gaza via land, sea and air routes.
The draft resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and affirms support for a two-state solution.
The US government, as one of five members of the security council with permanent veto powers, blocked a previous resolution calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza.

US is still reviewing text of Gaza resolution at UN, diplomatic source tells CNN​

The United States is still reviewing the text of a draft resolution on Gaza that the United Nations Security Council is set to vote on, a diplomatic source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The council’s vote on draft resolution 2334 is expected at around 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
The resolution drafted by the United Arab Emirates calls for a suspension of hostilities in Gaza to allow for the delivery of critically needed humanitarian aid, UAE Ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh said.

The US has vetoed previous measures at the Security Council and voted against a call for a ceasefire in the larger General Assembly.
That lends significance to Tuesday’s vote. If the US allows the resolution to pass, it would amount to an important signal to Israel — including from its top ally — of the growing international outcry over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
