Eleven of the 12 companies Canada targeted are Europe-based, with a lone U.S. player. Seven of the 12 companies told the Journal they were passing on Canada.
The most notable company saying “no” is German discounter Lidl, which operates across Europe and the U.S. and is owned by Schwarz Group.
Aldi didn’t respond to requests for comment this week, and neither did France-based Les Mousquetaires; Germany’s Edeka; Grupo Dia, of Spain; and Norway-based Reitangruppen.
Walmart and Costco, both U.S.-based, have a roughly 30% share in the Canadian grocery market.
