Monday, June 24, 2024, is a significant day for Canadians. It is the day of Stanly Cup Final Game 7: Edmonton Vs Florida, and most importantly, it is the day of Toronto-St—Paul's by-election.
St -Paul riding is one of the safest Liberal party seats in Canada. The Liberals have won St. Paul's seat for over 30 years since 1988. Even during 2011 Liberals were wiped out by Conservatives and NDP, not even an opposition party, St Paul's seat was one of the only seats in Toronto that the Liberals were able to hold.
A loss of this by-election could have a great repercussion within the Liberal caucus and might lead to a call and potentially force Trudeau's resignation.
The Liberals are expected to hold the seat and get 39% of the votes down from 49% from the last election and 55% from the one before.
However, a by-election is always tricky due to very low voter turnout, particularly in the summer, as the Durham byelection in March saw just 27% of voters cast a ballot, while in Calgary Heritage last year it was 28%.
There are 84,442 voters on the official list, so if just 27% come out to vote the next MP for St. Paul will be elected with fewer than 10,000 votes.
