Maersk CEO flags strong demand ‘pretty much everywhere’ except for the U.S. as outlook raised

Shipping giant Maersk on Thursday reported better-than-expected quarterly profit, defying trade fears even as the industry navigates a new era of tariff complexity.

Maersk also raised its full-year guidance and the outlook for global container market volume growth.

“Outside of the United States, we see a continued very strong demand and that is fueling the earnings and the upgrade that we were able to do today,” CEO Vincent Clerc told CNBC.

GM Will Import EV Batteries From China’s CATL Despite Tariffs

--- 49 minutes ago by Dow Jones christopher.otts@wsj.com

- GM will buy the batteries from China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology, one of the world’s largest battery makers, for about two years until the Detroit automaker and its Korean partner LG Energy Solution can stand up their own manufacturing of the lower-cost batteries in the U.S., according to people familiar with the plan.

- Because of Trump’s trade war, the automaker will have to swallow punishing tariffs. Chinese EV batteries currently carry total duties of about 80%, including Trump’s levies on foreign automotive parts, said Nunzio De Filippis, co-chief executive of CargoTrans, a logistics management firm.

- - GM’s decision illustrates how U.S. automakers and battery manufacturers are still lagging behind China in the ability to make cheaper batteries that can lower the price of electric vehicles and convince more consumers to consider them.

- Ford is licensing CATL’s technology and manufacturing process to make cheaper EV batteries at a factory under construction in Michigan. Those batteries are expected to power a small electric pickup that Ford is developing.

- Tesla, the leading U.S. maker of EVs, used LFP batteries made by CATL in some versions of its cheapest U.S. vehicle, the Model 3, for about two years, ending the arrangement shortly before President Trump ratcheted up tariffs on Chinese goods earlier this year, said Abuelsamid.
