During a single evening on Saturday, October 20, Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Archibald Cox; Richardson refused and resigned effective immediately. Nixon then ordered Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox; Ruckelshaus refused, and also resigned. Nixon then ordered the third-most-senior official at the Justice Department, Solicitor General Robert Bork, to fire Cox. Bork carried out the dismissal as Nixon asked.[2] Bork stated that he intended to resign afterward, but was persuaded by Richardson and Ruckelshaus to stay on for the good of the Justice Department.[3][4]

Trump的内阁成员就不一样了,他们必须serve the pleasure of the President。。。

Since a Federal Reserve governor serves a 14-year term, they can only be removed "for cause," a legal standard that has not been tested and proved. Lisa Cook has already stated that she plans to file a lawsuit to challenge the firing and is seeking a court injunction to block Trump's decision immediately.

If a court grants an injunction, she could be allowed to continue her duties while the legal battle proceeds, a process that could potentially reach the Supreme Court.

Bottom line: Trump can fire Lisa Cook, but only the courts can make a final ruling.

Presidents could oust governors whom they dislike and replace them with trump loyalists, turning interest rates, inflation, and banking rules into tools of politics instead of economics

Why is President Trump's attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook? Because it would give Trump-appointed Fed Governors the MAJORITY on the Fed board of 4 of 7 Fed governors.

As Trump said today: “We will have the majority, shortly, on the Fed board.”
