1980年代末，西班牙政府构思新建一条铁路线，将西班牙中部卡斯蒂亚与南部安达鲁西亚连接，同时绕过德斯佩纳佩罗斯山口。考虑多个方案后，西班牙政府认为应建造一条标准轨铁路，成为首条高速铁路。新计划名为 N.A.F.A. （连接安达鲁西亚之新铁路），以帮助南部停滞不前的经济。新线于1992年4月16日启用，同日正值为塞维利亚世界博览会开幕。7日后新线正式投入服务，每日有6班班次来往马德里、雷阿尔城（Ciudad Real）、普埃尔托利亚诺、科尔多瓦及塞维利亚。1992年10月开始，来往马德里、雷阿尔城、普埃尔托利亚诺的短程班次（称为 AVE Lanzadera，后来改称Avant）投入服务。

西班牙火车再次发生事故 一人丧生​

周二晚间（1月20日），一列通勤列车在西班牙巴塞罗那附近发生事故，造成至少一人死亡，数十人受伤。仅两天前另一次两列火车相撞的恶性事故中，丧生人数已升至42人。

（德国之声中文网）这列火车在距离巴塞罗那约35公里的赫利达镇（Gelida）附近，与一段倒塌在铁轨上的土墙迎面相撞。据当地媒体报道，列车司机在事故中丧生。

加泰罗尼亚紧急救援部门发布消息称，共有37人受伤，其中5人伤势严重。已有约20辆救护车赶往事故现场，伤者已被送往该地区的3家医院，列车内已无人被困。

加泰罗尼亚消防部门表示，他们正在对列车底部和周围区域进行搜查，排除尚有更多遇难者的可能性。

西班牙铁路运营商ADIF表示，本周席卷西班牙东北部的强降雨可能导致土墙倒塌。ADIF还表示，该线路的通勤列车服务已暂时取消。

加泰罗尼亚同日发生二起火车事故​

周日高速列车相撞事故死亡人数上升​

而就在刚刚过去的周日 （1月18日）晚间，一列高铁火车在科尔多瓦省阿达穆斯镇附近以约300公里的时速行驶时，脱轨冲入相邻铁轨，另一列高铁列车迎面驶来冲撞后脱轨。目前，这场事故确认的死亡人数已上升至42人，而人们担心死亡人数还会继续上升，因为仍有43人失踪。
