请教：emission test

今天收到一封Drive Clean来的信，说我的车在某个日期之前需要做emission test，否则没法renewal plate,请问几个问题：
1.这个test是必须的么？
2.在哪里做这个test呢？大概费用多少啊？
3.看到有些人也不renewal　车牌，这样可以么？

make appointment with Candian tire, test take about 30 min or less, cost should be a fixed price everywhere (maybe +/- 5 dollars) or so depends places??? most cars pass with good readings unless ur car is too old and/or never done tuneup etc, also that if ur car has exhaust leak they will not do the test for u, other than that, i dont' think there are anything else more ...

The cost of test is about $35, takes about 10-15 minutes
