Is there a place to pick up strawberry and cherry in Ottawa?

There is one on Richmond Road. Very close to Bayshore, just a little bit west. If you drive on the Richmond, you will see the sign "Pick your Berry" or something like that. I went there several times last year and the strawberry there is pretty good, but I didn't see any cherry. I don't know if it is already open this summer or not. I drove by the week before last week, it said "Open soon". By the way, it opens 8am to 8pm :)

How do I select the best berries?

Strawberries: Look for plump, bright red and fully ripe berries. Strawberries do not ripen after they are picked so avoid choosing berries with white or green spots. The SIZE of strawberries is not important. All berries are equally sweet and juicy.

Raspberries: Select berries that are bright, fresh, plump, well shapes and solid in colour. Clean unstained boxes indicate fresh unbruised fruit.

Blueberries: Look for plump, dry, clean fruit of even colour and size. Always handle gently.

Sort and remove any bruised or damaged berries as soon as possible and use in sauces or jams. Place the berries in cool well ventilated containers (0-50° C/32°-40°). The moisture content of Ontario strawberries is high, so store uncovered or loosely covered. Hull strawberries and rinse gently just before serving. Ontario raspberries are best left in their boxes, covered loosely and enjoyed within 2 days. Ontario blueberries are best stored in the refrigerator in a shallow well-ventilated container. They will last 1 week or longer. It is important to wash berries only when necessary and just before serving.

Some helpful hints for purchasing, picking, preparing, and storing are also available in the "Berry Cookbook "which can be purchased at your local berry farmer call the Berry Hot Line for more information. 1-800/263-3262.

*** After a rain, please call farm to check on reopening times. Also dress to keep dry.

When is the best time to pick berries ?

Berries are best picked when the temperature is not too hot, ie, early morning or in the evening. A cloudy day is also great.

Check with your local grower or the Berry Hotline (1-800-263-3262).

Where can I pick Cherries: Cherries are NOT a berry.

They are a member of the stone fruit family; ie. peaches, pears, plums. Call 1-888-4-BUYONT and ask for the Pick Your Own Guide.
