Clues To A Killer
The questions are haunting, as queries without answers so often are. Who took Cecilia Zhang, how did they get away with it, and most important of all - why was she killed? Police are being extremely tight lipped about their investigation into the child's abduction and murder, refusing to release even the cause of her death.
They warn it's still early in their investigation, and they don't want to reveal any information only the killer might know.
The mystery only compounds the tragedy, which ended 159 days after the nine-year-old girl was taken from her Whitehorn Crescent bedroom.
And while public clues are thin, there are a few things we do know. Whoever took Cecilia from her home was apparently familiar with its layout.
They knew exactly where she slept, which window to break to gain entry and how to spirit her out of her room without making any noise.
That likely means they'd been in the Zhang house before, as a tenant, repairman, acquaintance or visitor, and that the parents may have known them. That knowledge could narrow down the suspect field, and help police in their investigation.
The other part of the unfolding case that may help cops is the area where the child's body was found. It's a remote stretch near Mississauga Road and Eglinton Ave., near Highway 403. And those familiar with it say it's almost inaccessible in the winter.
That may mean the youngster was brought there soon after she was taken, just before the winter's snows that hid her remains for five months.
It's also suspected the culprit must have been familiar with the scene. It's in the same general vicinity where two mysterious phone calls were made to the Zhang home the day their daughter was taken.
There's an old Chinese expression that says "the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step." Police are now taking those first steps, in hopes they lead to a ruthless killer and some closure for a devastated family and city.
