For four days in April and May, New York was the place to be for Ferrari fans. The famous Italian car company celebrated its fifty year presence in the United States by displaying some of its greatest cars in front of the Rockefeller Center. Only the greatest and most important Ferraris were chosen to represent Ferrari's history.
The celebration actually started on April 7th when Rossa Corsa became the official color of New York for a day. From dawn until dusk, the Empire State Building was lit up in Ferrari Red. "The fact that Ferrari's 50 years in the US are being celebrated by illuminating the Empire State Building with red light would have thrilled Enzo Ferrari as much as it does me and anyone else who is proud to be Italian," said Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo.
Included in the collection was the first ever customer Ferrari, a 1947 166 SC with an estimated value of over $1,000,000. The car will be offered for sale on August 12 at the Christie's Auction in Monterey. Other historic Ferraris on display include a 1951 212 'E' Superleggera Coupe, a stunning red and black 1957 250 GT 'Tour de France', two 246 Dino GT's, a 1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona, a 1985 288 GTO, a 1987 Testarossa, a crowd-favorite 1995 F50, and my personal favorite, a beautiful blue 1962 250 GTO. Each decade was represented well by the cars that have made Ferrari famous over the years. The current Ferraris were all on display as well - the 612 Scaglietti, 360 Spider, 360 Challenge Stradale, and 575M Maranello. Two current racing Ferraris - the 575 GTC and a 360 Challenge completed the Ferrari line-up.
Surprisingly, the collection of Ferraris didn't attract massive amounts of attention from the crowds passing by. However, that just made it easier for those who wanted to see the cars to stand in awe of the wonderful array of Italian machinery.
Even after the cars were packed up and taken away, the celebration of Ferrari's fifty years in the US will continue to go on with events later on in the year. Ferrari will be the featured marque of the Pebble Beach Concours, Concorso Italiano, and the Monterey Historics in August. The Ferrari Club of America will also hold its largest ever gathering in August as well. Ferrari, coming off its best sales year ever in the United States, announced that all 2004 Ferraris sold in the US will come with a special logo featuring the Ferrari logo and the American flag inside the number fifty.
Luca di Montezemolo summed up Ferrari's feelings on the anniversary by saying, "There has always been a great feeling between the United States and Ferrari...there are over 20,000 Ferraris on US roads and America's passion for the marque is growing all the time."
