What I'm trying to say is: those who accumulated credit card debts due to reckless spending shouldn't be viewed the same as those who accumulated student loans due to schooling. Even though higher education may not be a necessity, at least it has more validity than say, going on a big shopping spree with money you don't have.
And haven't you heard of people who are working and still have student loan debts? I do. There are co-workers of mine who worked for several years and still haven't paid off their loans yet. Is it 'cause they are lazy and stupid or wasting away on a luxurious life, not exactly, it's 'cause the debt is just that high (see the 50K with 8% example).
But whatever, we still have to pay off what we owe, so I'm not complaining about the system, just trying to clarify it for those who are viewing it as a walk in the park.

That's some difference on the purpose. But the real reason for people oweing less than 20K student loan and couldn't pay it off is simply because they don't have the incentive to pay it off.
Even at $8/hr, that's $14400 a year, assuming 37.5 hrs per week, or $13000 after tax. The minimum cost for a single could be squeezed to under $300/month as we know, but let's leave it for a much comfortable $600. You still have $6000 a year towarding paying your loan if you really want to pay. And we are not talking about finding a 2nd job, salary raise, etc.
Of course, if you insist on living a $600 1-bedroom with yourself, go vacations 2-3 times per year, driving a BMX, buying a house, you won't be able to pay 1/10th of a merely several thousand dollars loan even you find a 30K or 40K work as REDFACE mentioned.
And I, too, won't bother to pay a loan with such low interest which could be relieved from time to time, if it's lower than my auto loan or etc.
Heh, <$300 a month, I think it's safe to say that there are more people who won't be able to endure that type of life style than those who can...最初由 Kent以东首帅哥 发布

BTW, where can you find a 1-bedroom for $600 in Ottawa I'd like to know...
