Oil price is down to just about $50 USD per barrel because of China's rate hike.

Oil Steadies, China Rate Hike Unsettles

1 hour, 32 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices steadied on Friday after an 8 percent rout spurred by a surprise interest rate hike in China that raised doubts about demand from the world's second largest energy user.

U.S. light crude gained 28 cents to $51.20 a barrel after losing $1.54 on Thursday. London Brent crude eased three cents to $48.34 a barrel.

A price fall of nearly $5 from an all-time high of $55.67 began after U.S. government data on Wednesday showed an unexpectedly large rise in crude oil supplies last week.

Profit-taking continued after China on Thursday announced its first rate rise for almost a decade as it attempts to cool runaway economic growth that has played a major role in driving up world energy demand.

But analysts and traders predicted any weakness in prices would be short-lived and that oil supplies would remain overstretched for the foreseeable future.

"We think it's simply an interruption of the trend and not the end of it. Nothing fundamentally has changed," said Kevin Norrish of Barclays Capital.

"The Chinese rate rise in its own right is tiny, though it is symbolic," he added.

Other analysts also said the rate rise would have a limited impact and that ongoing shortages in China's power sector would continue to fire the nation's hunger for oil, even though energy demand is not expected to continue at this year's breakneck pace.

"The factors that are driving oil demand continue to be in place even with an interest rate hike," said Scott Roberts, Beijing-based analyst for Cambridge Energy Research Associates.

"The reality is that China's power shortage will continue for the next several years no matter whether or not there will be a change in interest rates," he said.

China's oil demand growth is expected to slow from this year's 14.5 percent to 5.7 percent next year, the International Energy Agency said in its latest report.

OPEC (news - web sites) CAN DO NO MORE

Oil prices have reached record levels despite the fact the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is pumping virtually at full throttle.

The cartel is pumping more than 30 million bpd, its highest output in 25 years, but the crude is predominantly hard-to-refine heavy crude, which gives relatively low yields of the distillates now in high demand.

"OPEC has done everything we can do to cool the market. I don't believe there is a shortage on the supply side," Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh told Reuters during a visit to China. "We are already oversupplying by two million barrels per day."

Residential Customers - Rate 1
For customers who purchase their natural gas supply from Enbridge Gas Distribution
Natural gas prices have changed

The Ontario Energy Board ("OEB") has approved an adjustment to the rates Enbridge Gas Distribution charges its customers. These new rates include an increase in the Gas Supply Charge, a Gas Cost Adjustment refund, a decrease in the Delivery Charge, as well as a one-time Rate Adjustment refund. These new rates are effective January 1, 2005.

Your current bill has been calculated using the new approved rates for gas consumed from January 1, 2005 onwards. The rates are listed below.
Gas Supply Charge

The Gas Supply Charge will increase from 28.5724 cents per cubic metre ("¢/m³") to 31.0561 ¢/m³ due to higher natural gas prices. This price is based on a forecast of market prices for the next twelve months. The forecast price is reviewed every three months and, if necessary, adjusted accordingly to reflect market changes. If our forecasts are over or under, we reimburse or collect from customers.

Enbridge Gas Distribution does not make a profit on the cost of natural gas. Customers pay the same price as Enbridge Gas Distribution pays for natural gas.
Gas Cost Adjustment

The OEB has approved a Gas Cost Adjustment refund of 1.2775 ¢/m³ for the period of January 1, 2005 to September 30, 2005. The reimbursement is a result of our actual gas costs being lower than previously forecast.
Delivery Charge

The OEB has approved a decrease to the Delivery Charge to reflect lower operating costs and a reduction in the cost of transporting natural gas from Western Canada. The decrease will amount to approximately $5 for a typical customer per year.
Changes for a typical customer

When combined, these rate changes represent a net increase for customers who purchase their gas supply from Enbridge Gas Distribution.

The impact of this rate change will depend on how much gas you use. A typical residential heating and water heating customer using 3,064 cubic metres per year would pay approximately $70 more annually, excluding the Gas Cost Adjustment.
Rate Adjustment

The OEB has also approved a one-time Rate Adjustment refund. The one-time refund would amount to approximately $10 for a typical residential customer and will appear on your January bill.

The Rate Adjustment has two components:

* A refund for volumes consumed from October 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004, which reflects the OEB's final decision on delivery rates for that period.
* A one-time refund for volumes consumed from October 2003 to September 2004, which is a result of an OEB approved earnings-sharing arrangement and other adjustments.

Enbridge Gas Distribution provides safe, reliable distribution of natural gas to customers.
