the popular gas in Ottawa are:
87/89/91 (octane percent)
Usually high compression need high octane to avoid the "compression igniting or knocking"
but there are more factor to cause knocking, such as chamber shape,
high level car with high compression (such as BMW ) needs continuous output high power, premium gas is good choice. but it can still use low octace. but the performance is low then expected (if no knocking occured)
