如果你恰好从事的是和中国所擅长行业.那么你是没有希望的.因为
中国可以提供更为廉价的产品.就象通信和IT.
反之,如果你的行业和中国是互补的,那么至少这辈子是不用愁了.
对加拿大这么小的一个经济体,完全可以放弃中国所擅长的行业,
依靠能源继续享受发达国家的经济繁荣.北电之流的企业, 高投入
低产出, 应该是这个国家的不良资产. 它实在没有存在的能力和
价值. 越早倒闭越好.

Nortel is not 高投入低产出, Nortel supports itself. It's the government in this country is 高投入低产出. Without Nortel, maybe there will be 1/3 less people in this world even know where Canada is.

Agree. Most IEEE papers about Multimedia I read were written by Chinese.

But papers don't mean creativity. Chinese are better in writing papers, but not transfer them into the products. If you got your Ph.d, you should know lots of paper are junks, or the paper for the sake of paper. How much value you can get from them, I doubt. China needs more people with leadership and know how to do business, otherwise, we are just a bunch of worker, not matter how much pay you get.

公认的科学家的材料们都没能读到博士.二流的学生们好容易
熬成了教授, 他们热衷的多是横向项目.有多少人全心全意的
追求学术理想?

You are right. But that's just part of the problem. Our education system teaches us to work hard in order to have a good job an earn good money, not to do something from your interests. The prof here don't earn as much as those in the companies, but lots of them like do the research as it's their interests and they choose to do that, not be forced. Another thing is that doing 理论物理 doesn't mean you have creativity, but just on the countary, these people may be better in deriving equations, but they don't know how to create things. Remember such saying: scientists are to discover what exist while engineers are to creat what do not exist.

But many papers are IEEE Transaction papers. Papers at this level mean innovation.

Looks like you didn't publish paper there while I did. Most papers there are just for the sake of paper, contain lots of math and conclusion are not that useful. People can write a lot of papers on one topic for years. I am not saying that there is no creativity there, but should say most do not.

As for invention in China, other than paper or gunpowder, can you tell me more? And remember those inventions were from thousands years ago.

Yes, I published 6 IEEE transaction papers and more than 30 IEEE conference papers 10 years ago. Yes, those techniques are from papers but there are very few good papers, that's my point. You see lots of Chinese publishing papers, but you cann't just draw the conclusion that Chinese are very creative. Prof in North America couldn't get enough students to work for them, so they get Chinese, Arabian as students as you can see them all writing papers. Japanese don't have many papers, but they know how to build good products which need a lot of creativity, not from papers, but from practice. When you go to Candian tire, you see lots of small tools, which are very creative, but cann't you find them from IEEE papers.

我觉得师长过于乐观了。本次报道除了头一篇文章外，还是负面报道居多，但这也是现代中国的问题。
在选择用词上还是能感觉出根深的偏见与敌意：比如描述中国户籍制度而使用的apartheid，或者描述中央领导们所使用的cabal等。
相信越来越多的西方人都会意识到李光耀的话：”It's not possible to pretend that this is just another big player. This is the biggest player in the history of man.”

Which one contribute most to mankind, a man invent car or a man build a reliable car?
Japanese are good at making good consumer products.
But they are not driving force of civilization. What changes the world?
Not some smart tools. But Computer, Internet, Cell phone.
You can't think papers just as publications. Lots of creative ideas behind it.
