Thanks for your elaborated explanation, it is true that the Internet uses Routing to transmit data and message between computers online. I guess you didn’t answer precisely the question of our BBS friends. Thereby I would like to have some points to add.. Correct me if I am wrong;

1. First of all, if you want to connected to the Internet, you have to install a Dialup Modem for dialup online (slow), a Cable Modem or ADSL Modem for high speed online. You have to signup with a relevant ISP (Internet Service Provider). For the high speed, you also have to install a NIC (network card or LAN Card) in your PC for connect to the ISP via the Modem.

2. Usually, your ISP will assign to you 2 IP addresses as specific identification of your PC. One IP address is good for only one PC. So you can have 2 PCs connected to the Modem via a Hub (a multiplexer, if you have only one PC, you don’t have to use it. WHAT IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 2 PCs??

3. Then you need a Router to be installed between your PCs and the high speed modem instead of a Hub.

4. The Router will use the Packet concept as explained by Cable4You to combine the traffic of all the PCs into a single data packet stream to/from the modem. Since, the ISP’s server see only one single connection from you Modem, so you only need one IP address to connect more than 2 PCs, say 4, 8 or more. That is the advantage of a Router.

5. Another advantage of the Router is to provide a firewall between you PC and Internet. It stealth your PCs from seeing by others on the Internet. Somehow safe guard you PCs from the hackers.

6. You can have wireless router to provide wire and wireless connection. The PC for wireless connection should have a wireless LAN installed

7. Don’t bother with the Router if you have only one PC. Router cannot be standalone to connect online.

i think u need to learn more about dhcp

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an Internet protocol for automating the configuration of computers that use TCP/IP. DHCP can be used to automatically assign IP addresses, to deliver TCP/IP stack configuration parameters such as the subnet mask and default router, and to provide other configuration information such as the addresses for printer, time and news servers.

上面两件事办完了,你就可以上网了.什么?你不只一台电脑.OK.那就去买router,还是futureshop或者bestbuy.这里就不讨论hub的问题了,router现在便宜的一塌糊涂. 什么?电脑一个楼上,一个楼下?还想用无线.好,那就把上面那个router退了,买一个无线的router和一个无线的网卡.无线网卡分给台式机用的和笔记本用的两种(USB不要提,会把楼主弄糊涂)买哪个取决于你哪台电脑想无线上网.买完之后,怎么装?那就是另外一个问题了.找朋友,出钱请,都行.这回明白了吧.好了,大家都洗洗睡吧.

Thank you, You are right.

We can obtained IP address automatically, if your ISP don't use static ip address. What I mean in the short explanation of the identification is the MAC instead of a dynamic IP address, usually you can have 2 from the ISP. Each PC can have a specific MAC. It can only be changed by the ISP.
