Your Challenge
Under the direction of a Supervisor, Fabrication Services, this position is responsible for the process involved in the fabrication and machining of components/prototypes, which includes: the interpretation of designs/sketches, interpretation of verbal information, the estimation of the work plan, as well as the provision of advice in terms of feasibility, and the actual fabrication process. This position acts as a resource to internal and external clients to operate and maintain equipment, to prepare Numerical Control (NC) Programs and to support Computer Aided Machining (CAM) Operations. The incumbent is also expected to implement workshop safety practices at all times.
The mandate of DFS is to provide a consolidated and flexible prototyping capability, and specialized technical facility support services, tightly integrated to the research programs of client institutes. The work is undertaken within a team environment and could be performed at any one of the DFS fabrication facilities throughout the National Capital Region.
The physical demands of this position include: handling heavy and bulky objects, pushing, pulling, lifting, slinging, hoisting, crouching and bending, and working in noisy environments with airborne particles, oily materials, sharp metal remnants. Manual dexterity and well developed hand-eye coordination is essential. Applicants may be subject to undergo a physical assessment.
Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates.
Education
Graduation from an approved trade college in precision machining.
Preference may be given to candidates with a Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification in a precision machining trade.
Alternative: Candidates with an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may also be considered.
Experience
Considerable experience in precision machining and/or instrument and toolmaking. Experience using personal computers and associated office software (i.e. MS Office). Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Gibbs would be an asset.

Assessment Criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical Competencies:
* Ability to analyze drawings/sketches to plan the fabrication process.
* Ability to fabricate precision components such as prototypes, scientific apparatus, jigs, fixtures, using manual and CNC machining equipment.
* Ability to inspect parts with precision measuring tools.
* Knowledge of machine shop safety practices.
Behavioural Competencies:
From the Technology Support Competency Profile:
Client focus (level 2), Communication (level 1) Results Orientation (level 2), Teamwork (level 2) and Self-Knowing & Self-Development (level 1).
For this position, NRC will evaluate candidates using the following competency profile(s): Technology Support.
Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC's directives.
Salary Range
For English only positions: From $43,084 to $59,003 per annum.
For Bilingual positions: From $43,084 to $59,003 per annum, plus the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 a year to the candidate who meets the language requirements.
