Managers of about $600 billion in Canadian investments funds are holding out hope for Nortel Networks Corp.
After months of second guessing by its accountants, the beleaguered designer of telephone systems equipment has promised it will finally let investors know by Monday what it really, really made or lost in 2003. A few weeks later, it will talk about early 2004 results.
Yet, amid this fog of uncertainty, some of the biggest institutional investment managers are feeling rather fearless about Nortel, at least on paper. When a group of 48 were asked for their top stock picks (among big companies) for 2005, Nortel was one of three names mentioned most often.
That's notable because Nortel has been such a painful example of the tech-stock debacle. Its shares surpassed $122 in 2000, only to skid to less than a dollar in 2002. Prices recovered to $11 as recently as last February, but fell again to close yesterday at $4.09.
Nortel said Thursday that fourth-quarter revenue will be at the low end of earlier forecasts.
The fund managers were not asked how much fresh money they would be placing on their stock picks, to make things a little more interesting.

放弃在NT给报告前买入的想法了, 若NT真是没问题,会有好的发展就不应该捞一把就走. 比起5块到10块, 3块到5块就不多了. 股票套的往往是想捞一把的人...

We are focused on cash, cost and revenue to ensure our business model better serves our targeted operating performance. I am pleased with our cash performance in Q4, 2004 and we enter 2005 in a strong position."

Independent review results in extensive recommendations by the Audit Committee for remedial measures that are intended to prevent the recurrence of the inappropriate accounting conduct, to rebuild the NT's finance environment based on principles of transparency and integrity, and to ensure sound financial reporting and comprehensive disclosure. Board has adopted these recommendations in their entirety and instructed management to develop a detailed plan and timetable for their implementation, which will be monitored by the Board. Twelve senior executives of Nortel's core executive leadership team have voluntarily undertaken to pay to the Company over a three year period the amount of their Y03 "Return to Profitability bonuses" totaling approximately $8.6 mln, and to disclaim any potential award of the remaining two installments of Y03 restricted stock plan. Board has cancelled the remaining two installments for all eligible employees under Y03 Restricted Stock Unit Plan. Company also names Susan E. Shepard as Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Shepard comes from position as Commissioner for the New York State Ethics Commission. NT restated Y03 EPS from continuing ops were $0.06 per share on revs of $10.2 bln, Y02 results were a loss of $0.75 on $11 bln in revs, Y01 loss was $7.30 on revs of $18.9 bln.

When any employee got laidoff, Nortel will offer him a big amount of money. If I am the boss, I will never do that. And if I am a shareholder, I will feel uncomfortable.
