Not necessary. You can have two layers of brick wall and fiberglass
in between. But it is much more expensive. You can find this type of house in Euro. In Ottawa, you need to custom build it.

Not entirely for cosmetic purpose. Bricks are a lot more durable and last a lot longer than other materials. It requires little maintanence.

Double-brick wall has not been used in constructing new homes for at least 50 years if not more. Brick veneer wall, a non-load bearing, decorative wall is widely used today for obvious benefits:
-cheaper
-low maintenance
-better thermal insulation
-same appearance as solid brick

Double-brick wall today adds an extra layer of insulation in between the walls, as opposed to just air 50 years ago, thus dramatically increase the insulation level, but also its cost.

Custom-built homes are a different story: when you have the dough, you can do whatever, but that's not what we are discussing here, right?

The brick veneer is not just for cosmetic purpuse, it also provides
protection to the structure. In term of cost, brick is higher than aluminum, which is in turn higher than vinyl. That basically tells you the quality of materials.

By the way, my house is brick+aluminum. I don't like vinyl, it feels
too soft.

Oh but it is, it's really not a matter of personal opinion. Price of material in your quoted case reflects market demand rather than the actual quality, IMHO. :)

Oh? You must love those old brick buildings in Downtown area which need paint to cover the trace of acid rain once a while, or hehe, anyways, if I had money, I would have my house build with stone veneer...:smokin:

Brick exterior lasts for 80 to 100 years before it needs paining. Sidings don't last that long. You may have to replace sidings after 30 years. My house is 16 years old and there is no trace of acid rain. It still looks like a new house.

Difference is: YOU paid for the price of brick exterior, and SOMEONE else will pay for the price of vinyl replacement.

Personally, I think that money could spend elsewhere on things like bigger lot, granite coutertop and hardwood staircase. :lookaroun

Oh, but if an owner does not sell the house for another 40 years, assuming he lives long enough, then he will bear the replacement cost.
U no, we can find brick houses in Ontario. In other provinces, like Alberta, there are very few brick houses. Therefore, it's not a big deal to people living there.
