If your income is between 35000-70000, I personally think you should buy RRSP if you have money on hand.

You can save for your retirement inside or outside of RRSP. The only difference between RRSP and non-RRSP is the timing of taxation.

Remember, with RRSP, you don't reduce your tax, you just delay it. But unfortunately you won't know now the following:

1)Whether your income will be higher now or in the future.
2)Whether Canadian tax will be higher now or in the future.

So you can only base your decision on what you know now, like how much you make in 2004.

Do a google search on OAS and CPP, those are goverment plan for seniors.

In addition, if you lose your job sometime before you are 65, you can take RRSP out right away. Your income in that years when you do not have jobs should be lower. This reduce the risk that you will have higher income after you are 65.

This is very risky.
CCRA will pay special attention to your tax files

I don't think you are right by saying that buying RRSP is simply delaying tax not reducing tax.

You reduce your tax when buying RRSP. If you consider that when you retire, you don't have income, then withdrawing from your RRSP won't pay or pay little tax, so overall it's not to delay but to reduce tax

Don't listen to him as I found his understanding is not complete correct. You should buy RRSP and the rule is quite simple. Even if you don't live here in the future, you can still leave your RRSP in Canada and you can come back to use it when you retire. You can also withdraw RRSP when you don't have income before you retire, as at that time, your income is low and you won't pay or pass less tax on RRSP (plus the interest, or capital gain).

If you don't buy RRSP, you will reply solely on government's CPP plan, which I am not sure will still be there when you retire. So buy some RRSP for yourself just in case. Even if the CPP is still there,
then if you have RRSP, you can retire early, say, at age of 60, and start to withdraw money from RRSP. When you use up your RRSP and reach 65, then you can still apply for CPP.

Plus your interest or capital gain from RRSP is not taxable until withdraw, and if you don't have income at that time, then you don't pay tax on it.

I feel that you can claim your income as loss at the first several years if the income is from the same company, not from other resource. And you could only claim the loss for first several years as after that, the CCRA will suspect you and check your book.

Never heard if you can claim your other income to a company you register. For sure you can claim some utility usage if you have a peronal business at home outside your normal job.

We are only talking about income between $35,000 ~ $61,000, the Ontario marginal tax rate at that range is 31% in 2004. So, in some future years, if your marginal tax rate is lower than 31%, you gained. Otherwise you lose.

So to benefit, you must make sure that before 65, you have a few years where your top marginal rate is less than 31%. That depends on you and Canadian government (how much they would tax in the future).

People can buy RRSP with income between 35000 ~ 61,000. But there is real chance they may not benefit from it.

People can buy RRSP with income between 35000 ~ 61,000. But there is real chance they may not benefit from it.

There is a chance that when the person is withdrawing from RRSP, the total annual income is still lower than, say, $35,000 if one choose to. In this case, you will not only defer your tax but also decrease it. But again, that is personal choice. One may choose to do this since he does not believe he have the need to use that much money per year when he retires. By the time one retires, most likely the mortgage is all paid off, all he has to spend on is food, clothing, transportation and some entertainment expenses. Though to some other people, they may think they need more than the bare necessity.

So, one may choose to put money away in RRSP, to delay the tax payment, and possiblely use the tax amount saved to do more investing to earn even more. Plus the personal choice of reducing the tax when he does start to withdraw from RRSP.

Or, one could choose not to get RRSP, pay full tax up front, loose the opportunity to invest with the money he could have kept for a while, and loose the chance of withdrawing from RRSP at a lower tax rate by his own choice.
