Immigration Protestors Take Fight to Volpe
-- Sponsor Your Parents Demonstration Send Strong Message --
TORONTO, March 11, 2005 ? Protestors took their fight to the top today at a demonstration outside Immigration Minister’s Joe Volpe’s office, organized by immigration activist group Sponsor Your Parents. Supported by members of the Conservative Party, over 500 Sponsor Your Parents protesters demonstrated against the government’s unwillingness to consider the immigration of applications of the parents of Canadian immigrants, while continuing to collect massive application fees.
Statements from Co-Organizers Eugenia Yakhnin, Kalen Liang, Michael Mostyn and Robert Hakim spoke to the personal pain and sacrifice that this situation has brought into their lives. Conservative Party of Canada MP Jeff Watson (Essex) pledged that the Conservative Party will do everything it can to move this issue to the front burner. Watson pointed out that families are the bedrock of Canadian society and that “this program speaks to the strengthening and intergenerational maintenance of the family.”
“The processing of sponsorship files has virtually stopped at the first stage of approval, despite the fact that all sponsors paid their processing and visa fees in advance as they were told this would expedite the process,” says Eugenia Yakhnin, Founder of Sponsor Your Parents. “For some people, these fees were paid almost two years ago and they haven’t heard a word from Immigration Canada.”
Immigrants to Canada must pay non-refundable fees starting at $500 per parent to have the government consider their parents immigration applications. The protest also urged the government to raise the Immigration Parental Class Quotas, which has fallen from 19,376 in 2003 to only 6000 in 2005.
According to Sponsor Your Parents, the Canadian government is violating Section 3 of the Immigrant and Refuges Protection Act, which provides Canadians the right to family reunification. For further information see
