See in a yard like that, where you are relatively close to your neighbors, I'd want to have a patio instead, otherwise, your fence is pretty much wasted and that you are looking into other people's house.

One of the common problems with new house these days is that the back yard is usually smaller than old house. A big a deck would make it looks like a big fat person in a small size bathtub. But small size deck really isn't attractive and less functional.
The deck (400 sf) actually occupies less than 1/5 of my back yard (2250 sf). The view of the picture may not be that real.
Even on a patio, I am still looking into other people's house. This is one drawback that the developer intended to have, which I did not like. They intentionally lowered the middle property line. Unfortunately, there is a limit on the max. height of the fence according to city by-law.
Further, I have an 8-step drop from the house to the yard ground. A patio with a lonely stair would not look very well. That is why I designed a two-tier deck. The steps are divided to 2-2-3.
