I think the labour fee $1700 is reasonable for painting a 1800-sq.ft. townhouse.

I know nothing about primer and paint. I think I should go to a store, like Canadian Tire, and ask the salesperson for help. I do not even know how to select color.

Don't you never ever go to Canadian Tire for good work.

Regarding primer and coat paint, you could get free advice from Home Depot. With the original color in your room provided, the worker there will find the right percentage of mixing color by running a PC program, and he/she will make the paint for you. Price ranged from $20 to $40 per gallon.

If you have a problem selecting colors to match your own decor, I'd suggest you to go to Benjamin Moore, or Rendall's for a designer to come to your home, you typically get a discount from buying their paints, so the consultation usually works out to be a free service.

有个问题，一间这样size的房子，需要多少加仑的漆呢？

using primer cover the color first , then use the color you chose to paint.
for entire town house, around 1800 sf, labour around 1700$.(a contractor give me this estimate)

对,这只是LABOR.你可以去HOMEDEPOT买漆的地方问,他们会告诉你需要多少.
按我的经验,10X10的房间,不用PRIMER,光用漆,刷两遍,1-1.5加仑
