a last word:
Cuba is a fine place to go, if you love sun, sea and beach. Cuba is the major destination of travellers from Europe and Canada. You will have a lot chances to chat with people from different countries. Be prepared for and enjoy different cultures. i once chatted with a girl from Czech on a boat and... and she was topless in front of me. That was quite an experience. Europeans are more likely to be topless. Canadians are more conservative in contrast. I often saw topless women on the beach. That was the good part. what about bad part? if you hate second hand smoking? you are in the wrong spot! Europeans smoke wherever, indoors and outdoors. In their countries, smoking in public area seems legal. I found it was hard to find a smoke free place. there was a piano bar in this resort that was smoke free. It was my favorite bar.
Most Cuba vacation packages are all-inclusive. that include accommadation, food, drink and free access to some facilities of your resort. excursions are extra, you need to pay for them. I went two tours. They were all good. I would take them again if I go back next time. espically, the second one. you took a sail boat ride for a day. morning we went snorkling, then swim with dolphins, afternoon we chat with others on the boad while a banch of Italian and Spinish danced in Cuban music. That was a great experience, I loved it. ok, I liked that naked Czech girl too. but that was not the point, right?
Currencies. starting this year, Cuba no longer accepts US dollars. All tourists are required to convert their money into CUC - cuba convertiable peso. The exchange rate is 1 peso = 1.44 Canadian. That is right, peso worths more. funny, erh? Also, if you are planning to take those excursions, you may want to pay cash. because, they will charge you 11% more if you use credit card. This started two days before my arrival.
They don't take any credit cards that are issued by or has a root to American banks. no Amex. so bring enough cash. we brought $500 with us, we ended up spending $700 or so.
Tiping: you do need to tip people. one peso should be good in most cases. most Cuban make less than 30 pesos a month. a peso should be a fair amount for them. 5 pesos, a sexy waitress will kiss you for that. did I try? no, I am not telling ya. :-D
We were special guests. Believe or not, we were told that we were the first ever guests who checked in with a Chinese passport in that resort. Everyone curious about us (my mother and I). :-D We therefore got a lots of attentions. Servants peeked at us all the time. It was a weird feeling. Yeah, actually, in such a huge resort we were the only Chinese looking people. But we managed to get over that, and enjoyed ourselves.
At the end, the only valuable tip: bring your sun cream with you! I applied sun cream as frequently as I could, but I still look like a piece of over toasted bread at the end! but I love that, I look more like a Cuban now. :-D
