hi guys,

After a year of hesitation, it finally comes to the point where I have to take some money out of my pocket. :-D I finally jump into this money-wasting habit, partly because some of you guys kept feeding me with drugs - superior shots. Damn, now I have to spend tone of money....to feed my endless desires. Should have found something costs less...

Anyways, for a jump start, I am going to buy a Canon 350D and following lenses:
1> Canon EF 17-40mm F/4.0L USM
2> Canon EF 50mm F/1.4
3> Canon EF 70-200mm F/4.0 (did someone sale this lens a while ago? I must have missed it...)
4> Sigma EF 12-24 F/4.5-5.6

Any suggestions, friends?

Also, I am open to used ones. If you guys happen to have one of these for sale, call me at (613) 301-2715.

Since, I will pretty much buy those or most of those from a camera store. Can any one provide me a solid store where I can get an excellent service and deal? I have checked out Simon's Camera in Montreal. they don't charge 8% PST on any items that shipped out of Quebec. Should I go with it? Also Dell.com seems another place to go. Their Canon lenses are currently on sale. Prices are in USD, still decent even after conversion. I just don't know how import taxes are charged and at what rate. Anyone out there has a clue or better yet experience?

Thanks a heap!

Congradulations ! It's about time to do it.

For buying new from store, you should check with 杨戬 as he just bought a very similar set.Simon's camera can be nice since you save the tax. I bought a few items and no problem. If you get the whole package all at one time (strongly recommended), negociate hard on those guys.

As to myself, I'm cheap and also not good at negociation so I buy most of my lens used. e.g., just bought a 100-400 IS used and it saves me about 600 bucks vs. buying new. That saving more than compensate that brand spanking new feeling.

About lens combo, overall good mix. Only thing is 17-40 and 12-24 overlapped too much. If you want real wide angle, get the 12-24 and put your money towards a faster midrange zoom (70-200 2.8 IS would be ideal), otherwise, 17-40 should be pretty sufficient and an excellent lens for landscape.

Hope this helps.

fad shouldn't have sold his xxb and bought DB if he had bought a XB IS. :D

Isn't garychan a drug dealer?! :D

I am just a beginner. As my skills improve, I will be buying following lenses:
1> EF 16-35mm F/2.8L
2> EF 24-70mm F/2.8L
3> EF 70-200mm F/2.8L

This has been a dream set of lenses. and as you know, they cost an arm and a leg.... For now though, as an starter, I will stay with a lower grade of lenses to improve my skills. What do you think?

Thank you for your advice. I actually agree with you. I think will leave telephoto zoom lens behind. I will play with wide angles and standard zoom lens for now.

Sorry, I did not explaion why I chose such a comb.
For 17-40, I will be using it as day-by-day lens. It is a decent lens. It has been admired everywhere I looked in the internet. I do a lots traveling. the main reason I do photography is I'd like to record the memory (scenes, events etc.) I have during my trips. most of them are landscape or architecture. The later often needs a wide angle. I also do a little portrait. I think a prime 50/1.4 should do the job nicely. It is cheap too. :-D

Based on my needs, do you think I have the right set? I am a beginner, I have to admit it. :)

Thanks again!

50 f/1.4 is not that cheap. It's around $600 for a new one. I have 17-40 f/4, 50 f/1.4 and 70-200 f/4. I use 17-40 and 70-200 most of the time, the 50 is reserved for my cat.

Xterra
