50 f/1.4 is not that cheap. It's around $600 for a new one. I have 17-40 f/4, 50 f/1.4 and 70-200 f/4. I use 17-40 and 70-200 most of the time, the 50 is reserved for my cat.

Sorry, it was a typo. I actually meant 50mm F/1.8 II. This lens has L-like performance, yet price is much lower. It costs only $119.95 at Simon's Camera. Looks like you have an exact same set as I was going to get. What is your comment on these lenses based on your hands-on experience? If you could share some to me, I would...would vote you as my favorite web buddy. :D

you are absolutely right. according to my research so far, IS drains a lots of power out of your battery. Which adds more inconvinience to a traveller, as I often have no access to city power, to recharge the batteries. Besides, the size and weight of XB IS is a killer to me. As a frequent traveller, I have no problem of walking/hiking around. but a heavy load will ruin my mood and trip.

My comment is... money well spent. I have some sample photos on my website (pictures of Geneva). They're taken by both 17-40 and 70-200. I was playing around with the exposure so you may find some of them are over or under (as I'm practising exposure measurement when brightness is not even). My friend's just told me that a GND filter can be used under sunny sky. I suggest that you don't spend too much on the lens for now. You need to spend on something else. You'll need a tripod, a monopod (for better mobility, with quick release), filters for each lens (UV, CPL, etc), flash, gadget bag, CF card, etc. All of these could cost you another thousand or more. :D

Sorry, my comment is evil...

while I am deciding what lenses to go with, I also wondering following stuff:
1> Memory card. How fast is enough for this camera? What type of memory card are you guys using?
2> I also need a carrying bag. Any suggestions on this one?
3> a tripod. Is there a light weight tripod but also supports firmly?
4> Filter vs. hood. What is a better choice?

Why not? I will grip everything I could to beat the cost. :-D

call me on my cell 301-2715. I am checking out Henry's today by noon. If you have anything cool, call me ASAP. I will think you very much!

what are those things for? I have never heard of those things. sweating... I am on my chair now, let's do the training.

lens pen:
Flat, triangular tip ideal for cleaning right into the corners of flat LCD screens on digital cameras, camorders and PDA's
Safe for all digital displays - won't scratch or damage
Unique self-replenishing tip
Cleaning compound will not spill or dry up

It was not your were being evil. It was the entire photography world gone insane. Think about it, really, the manufactures are putting us on a blade thin edge. The fans are being charged at max. How can one get eviler than that? :(
