Ottawa Residents Brace for Tax Increases

Ottawa residents are bracing themselves for an upleasant surprise in their mailbox this week.

Property assessments will be mailed out beginning Monday and that means higher taxes for most, with the average home seeing a twelve percent increase.

Meantime, Premier Dalton Mcguinty says unlike Toronto, community leaders here in the capital haven't expressed much interest in having the power to levy new taxes. Mcguinty says Toronto city council could get new taxing powers, but Ottawa will not.

Mine(bought new house last year) is $299,000 this year and last year was just $236,000.Is this increase( around 27% ) normal? Crazy.

No it is not. Get your builder's asking price for your model in Jan 1 2005. Go to www.mpac.ca to get a form, and ask for review.
