if you only want to drive for a short term, your Canadian license would be fine.

I think you need to get an international drive license based on your Canadian license, which you can get for $10 from CAA (if you are a CAA member). I was told that you can drive with an International driver license in Hong Kong.

(1) Blindspot check is COMPLETELY NOT needed
(2) When signal others, use your horn and high beam flash lavishly (it is like greetings to your fellow road-mates)
(3) NO such thing called "right-of-way." There is only one rule: (who-thinks)-who-get-there-first
(4) Most importantly, the only thing you need to know is driving straight, because turning or backing are all free-style-for-all.

不是不需要，而是绝对不允许回头做Blindspot check 。你必须会用各种后视镜，同时，因为别的司机也都将注意力集中在前面，所以，不会撞到你。
国内开车时回头做Blindspot check是非常危险的动作，是禁止的。
国内过路口的习惯是“一停二慢三通过”，绿灯亮时一般是直行车让对面的左转车（经验）。
国内开车，最重要的是注意行人和自行车。
国内市内开车，前后车距要保持在别的车不能并进来。
行人让自行车，自行车让小汽车，小汽车让大汽车。
国内路口红灯照相机特别多。路上的雷达测速点也特别多。建议使用国内的GPS软件驾车，有照相机和雷达测速点的警告标志和语音提示。

I drove in China with my Canadian license and was caught by the police while making a left turn. although the detail of the incident might not be relevant, the buttom line here is that you will be able to drive in China with a Canadian license.

就我知道，在上海浦东机场里就有部门直接给你临时驾照，出机场就能开车。实行了有两年了吧，详细要求不祥。

It was in Beijing and the police was trying to swipe my drive's license through his hand-held device, but his device did not work with my license. I paid a fine of $200 RMB cash. Although I was warned to change to a local driver's license, the officer also said it would be OK for me to drive in Beijing for a short period of time. Again, this is only my experience. cheers.

But I dont know how this magic mirror could work without extra eyes on the back of the head!! I personally saw accidents and countless near-misses in the Shanghai within span of 3 weeks that were definitly caused because of not checking blind spot...
You mean cars in china are equiped with special rear or side mirrors that let the driver to cover all blindspots in multi-lane road? Man... we should import this to Canada to make some money and make road safer...
